Read Across America Exceeds Expectations
The first major effort from all partners in the “Partners In Education” program exceeded expectations” said Gene Wise, Vice-President of Education. Over 75 volunteers visited the elementary schools of Kershaw County and read Dr. Seuss books to the students. It was all done on March 2nd to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary Dr. Seuss book – “Cat in the Hat”.
The program, sponsored by the Target Distribution Center which has been involved in the program for several years, will become an annual chamber activity on or around March 2nd which is celebrated as the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Target provided “Read Across America” kits to all elementary schools and hats for the readers. The kits included certificates of appreciation, balloons, poster, pencils and other items. Readers donned the famous red and white striped hats made famous in the Dr. Seuss books and read for an hour to the students.
Baron DeKalb Elementary added a different touch to their day. One of the adult volunteers at the school, Mrs. Pam Truesdale fashioned a costume for the “cat” and wore it during the day. As the book was read, Mrs. Truesdale kept the students laughing as she acted out the story.
“Partners In Education” has been a major emphasis for the Education Committee for the past three years. Former Vice-Presidents of Education, Donnie Wilson and Dr. Bobby Joseph, got it started with major assistance from Gene Wise and Mike Wallace of the Target Distribution Center. Mike, Bobby and Gene have continued to spearhead the effort this year.
In the program, businesses partner with the schools to provide monetary and volunteer assistance as needed. Each hour volunteered is counted as $25 donated and is used to qualify for interest fee bonds when available through the Qualified Zone Academy Bonds program. The Kershaw County School District has received over a half million dollars over the last two years through this program.
